I am finding it very difficult to explain why as both players have amazing goalscoring records, and I am sure they would cope equally well on cold, wet Tuesday evenings against Stoke, but I don't think I'd be watching if it was Messi, whereas the thought of Ronaldo skipping past some primitive English-style defending and thumping the ball into the net sounds quite enticing. Messi's goals are always admirable whereas Ronaldo's are exciting.

Messi for me - there's something mesmeric about watching him on the ball. Ronaldo is probably the 'all-round' better players - stronger, quicker, more powerful shooting, better header of the ball, but Messi in full flow is a thing of beauty, and his ball control is unworldly.

I don't think Messi will recover from his truly shocking 2013/14 season where he only scored 28 goals.

Messi is an unbelievable player but I find him more efficient than exciting. Ronaldo has me leaning forward in my seat when he is on the ball 40 yards from goal as you have no idea what he is going to try next.

I also think Ronaldo is more adaptable. Stick him in a league 2 team on a muddy pitch in February and he will fall out with everyone on the pitch, get in the refs face, but score 5 goals, take the match ball home and tell everyone he is the best in the world. Put Messi there and I think he would shrink away from his usual self, get kicked around a lot and sit on the floor with that baffled look on his face that he does. Not that playing in the English 4th tier is the place to decide world player of the year.

He's averaged a goal a game over the last 7 years so I'd suggest Messi is a pretty good goal scorer himself.
