Hat-tricks

by Forbury Lion » 17 Sep 2015 12:36

Can anyone remember a game where more than one hat-trick was scored, either two players on the same or opposing sides or one player scoring 6 goals?

I don't feel bad about cheating having looked it up, as interestingly* this has only happened twice in Premier League history.

Robert Pires and Jermaine Pennant both scored hat-tricks as Arsenal beat Southampton 6-1 in 2003.
And Marcus Bent and Roque Santa Cruz got three goals each for Wigan and Blackburn respectively, as the former won 5-3 in 2007.

There was an least one sick goal in that Arsenal Saints game IIRC.

A little from memory and a little from research to back it up:

Man City had three hatrickers ( Tony Adcock, Paul Stewart and David White ) in their 1987 Second Division 10-1 victory over Huddersfield

Bournemouths' Ted MacDougal got a triple hat trick in their 11-1 thumping of FA Cup hopefuls Margate in '71

Has anyone ever scored a hat-trick of own goals? - I imagine after the second one they would have been subbed.

Villa Wimbledon in 1994-5 had a Tommy Johnson and a Dean Saunders hat-trick, although I think one was almost an own goal.

The nearest I can remember, would be Sunderland losing 3-1 to Proctor (og) 2, Wright (og)

Chris Nicholl scored all 4 in a 2 2 draw once.

Someone must have scored a hat-trick in the 149-0 own goal fest that's the all-time record scoring game.

Not that I actually remember either of these, but:
1946 - Reading's record win, Maurice Edelston got 3 and Tony McPhee 4.
1960 European Cup Final - Di Stefano got 3 and Puskas 4

(Via Google) The only hat-trick of own goals appears to be Stan van den Buijs for Anderlecht whilst playing for Germinal Ekeren (lost 3-2).

To widen things further, the triple I always liked was Martin Palermo missing three penalties in one game for Argentina v Colombia.

Didn't Kerry Dixon score four up at Doncaster when we lost 5-7, but didn't get the match ball as Doncaster gave it to one of their players who scored three?

Sure that it was Hicks twice - I don't think so
One was a seriously good flick at the near post by Senior from a corner - just the wrong end

Yeah, deffo Hicks and Senior although I have also have not so fond memories of Hicks putting an 18yd bullet header into his own net in our last ever competitive game against Aldershot.

Undoubtedly the most impressive og I've seen by a Reading player although not a patch on Alan Pouton's centre circle oggy for us up at Grimsby.
