The departed starts we couldn't do without ?

by howser » 29 Oct 2015 19:40

Not really looking to be the best choices the three amigos made in their decision to leave the Mad Stad at the end of last season,

Pearce, one and only start the Capital one cup defeat at Portsmouth

Feds, In the Capital cup side but still on the bench in Prem games even with Boric's regular cock ups

Jem, Was leaving here for Top league football, Champions league football etc.........at Galatasary, doesn't even make the bench for League games, I think I read 26 minutes action in his Turkish dream so far.

You can add to that McCarthy who looking like third choice now at Palace, behind Hennessey and Speroni

That sun is not shining very bright on the other side for those guys.....................and we arnt actually missing them, it's a funny old game

The thing is though, I'm not sure many of us really said we would miss them, I didn't anyway. Feds maybe, but only because we haven't replaced him adequately. Jem was too injury prone and surplus anyway, and only a few idiots still living in the 2011/12 season couldn't see that Pearce being ousted as quickly as possible was essential to the rebuild that had to take place.

McCarthy was obviously the previous year but I'm not sure Pardew has decided his on his best goalie yet, think he is giving them all some game time. Having said that I'd happily have him back on loan for the rest of the season if they don't need him.

Thought McCarthy was getting a run of games? Federici will get his turn again soon. Others I agree with.

I can't think of many other than Gylfi and Long that have gone onto have successful post-Reading FC careers. Maybe Sidwell?

Definitely Sidwell as an absolute nailed on certainty, in fact I'd say Gylfi is the only one to eclipse him.

Doyle and Hunt both continued to have PL playing careers long after we were securely back in the Championship, even if Hunt took over Quashie's role. Rosenior did too on and off. A bit too early to call on Mariappa.

I'd hardly call Fed or AMac failures yet either.

genome Maybe Sidwell?
He got a premiership winners medal in his first season after leaving us, I'd say that counts.

Daniel Carriço - was in the winning UEFA Cup team after leaving us

If your going further back then Neil Webb, Kerry Dixon etc had good careers after leaving us.

This I see as good news when it comes to retaining players!

:P

The only success Sidwell enjoyed at Chelsea was when his wage packet arrived in his bank account. In every other respect his presence was utterly irrelevant.

Did he even receive a medal? There was a time when not all squad members did.

I think the 25 appearances he made that season makes his presence relevant enough. He wasn't a bad player, just unlucky that Jose brought him in and then left not long after. Not his fault.

You're right on the winner's medal though, can't seem to find his name anywhere so guessing he never received one.

The only reason Sidwell didn't receive a league winners medal for his only season with Chelsea (2007-08) is that Man Utd won the league!

Shorey didn't do as well as he should have done, but he's still made over 100 appearances in the PL for other clubs.

Sidwell went on to play for some big clubs, but he was never really spectacular. I've not really heard his name mentioned all that much since he left us, but I suppose by definition he's gone on to bigger things. I'm just not sure if you could call it "successful" in the same way you could for Gylfi and Long.

Seriously? He started 82 PL games in two and a half seasons for Fulham and scored 14 PL goals for them. That's a pretty key player IMO.

Long's yet to score 10 PL goals in a season isn't he... and has been in and out of sides without staking his place for the last couple of years, as Sidwell was with Chelsea and Villa. Only with far more competition at Chelsea than Long's had.

I think Long's failed to live up to his promise off tge back of that one great season with us. No question he's gone on to better things than us, but I'd firmly put him in the Doyle category no where near Siggy.

Yeah fair fooks probably a bit revisionist from me. Long is doing well in a good Southampton side though, I'd wager he's faired better than Doyle.

He's gone to better clubs but Doyle was much more crucial to Wolves than Long's been elsewhere IMO.

KC Royal On a similar theme, over the last few years i've often thought of those players that have gone on to do well at a similar or higher level to the one we were at when they left. This is the list I came up with, a total of 11 since Wembley 95.

Hislop
Primus
Osborn
Adie Williams
Tyson
Henderson
Adam Lockwood
Hahnemann
Doyle
Sigurdsson
Henry possibly

A list I posted on another thread several years ago. There may be the odd one that's a bit generous actually! Sidwell is the glaring admission there really, played regularly with Fulham and used to be a regular at Stoke. Long is one who would definitely be added from since that post. Would grudgingly admit that SHunt should be on the list too. Don't think anyone else has done enough since then though, at least not yet anyway.

Federici got a start for Bournemouth yesterday. Saw the highlights and was surprised to see how many times he punched (or rather pushed) the ball away when the catch seemed simpler. Indicates a loss of confidence to me.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, I'd missed it, but Stephen Kelly signed for Rotherham on the 19th.
