Copa America Centenario

by Ark Royal » 10 Jun 2016 16:24

What with the Euros about to start, the Copa America Centenario tournament in the US has taken a bit of a back seat.

Been hugely entertaining so far: Mexico humbled Uruguay 3-1, who then went on to lose 0-1 to surprise packet Venezuela and get eliminated at the group stage - with Luis Suarez almost literally throwing his toys out of the pram because he could not get on as a sub.

Venezuela now in QFs with Mexico, after the latter's 2-0 win against Jamaica last night. Over 83,000 - nearly all Mexican - at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to watch this one. Great Reading interest in this: Michael Hector, Gareth McCleary, Adrian Mariappa and Jobi McAnuff all started for the Reggae Boyz. Jamaica had FOUR clear-cut chances in the first half alone: Hector and McCleary both should have scored; Hector then had a piledriver brilliantly saved late in the game. Jamaica also denied a stonewall pen with the score at 0-1 and fell to a late goal on the break. Hector was IMMENSE in the holding midfielder role and easily MotM; McCleary seldom looked dangerous and was profligate in possession. Plus ca change. Mexico and Venezuela now meet in a group winner decider to avoid Argentina in the QFs.

The hosts were easily beaten 2-0 by a hugely impressive Colombia, but then recovered to thrash Costa Rica by a rather flattering 4-0. The US need just a draw in their final game against Paraguay to go to the QFs. Not convinced by the US and neither are the American public: only 39,000 in the 62,000-capacity Soldier Field in Chicago and a LOT of fans disguised as seats.

Brazil look unconvincing despite hammering Haiti 7-1 and were poor in a 0-0 against Ecuador. Controversy here as Ecuador had a good goal disallowed after a bad decision by the lino over an in/out ball on the bye-line. Argentina eased past Chile 2-1 with goals from Di Maria and Banega, helped by the Chilean keeper doing passable Feds impressions at his near post. Argentina looked unstoppable and the score was not as close as it suggests although Chile looked dangerous and had chances. Argentina's options are just ridiculous: they had Messi, Aguero and Lavezzi ON THE BENCH  Chile will be hard work for the losers of Mexico/Venezuela.

Most entertaining game so far was the 2-2 draw between Peru and Ecuador. Peru went 2-0 up early doors, but Ecuador got one back through Wet Spammer Enner Valencia and then piled it on in the second half. However, Peru nearly nicked it at the end. Check out the first Peru goal by Christian Cueva: https://youtu.be/bXo3syO0nY0. Peru also get first prize for best kit.

Today's games see Chile v Bolivia and Argentina v Panama. Messi starts and Panama could well be on the end of some real collateral damage.

Isnt this Dunga's second spell as Brazil manager? And didn't he get sacked last time for playing dour, unimaginative football that resulted in Brazil getting dumped out of a tournament early?

.... Does look a bit iffy but as per the comments maybe a touch of karma for their own less than sporting behaviour over the last few years of gradual decline.

Much better turn-out in Philly for the game with Paraguay. 50,000+ which was close to, if not, a sell-out.

Now they're off to Seattle to play Ecuador where I guarantee the rabid fans of the Pacific Northwest will fill whatever park they play it in. Winning their group will get the US supporter's attention...

It was a very impressive win against Paraguay after Yedlin's brain dead moment, picking up 2 yellows in a 30 second span, and playing the final 40+ minutes with only 10 men.

QFs still to be finally confirmed, but almost certain to be:

US v Ecuador
Peru v Colombia
Argentina v Venezuela
Mexico v Chile

Been impressed with Ecuador. They have some pace and power up front and may have some joy against a somewhat ponderous US defence without Yedlin. Peru have been excellent, but Colombia look a class above; Argentina will be one big boy too many for Venezuela. Mexico/Chile is a real close one. Chile still created chances despite being outplayed by Argentina; Mexico got lucky against Jamaica, who missed a hatful. Chile for me.

Semis:
Ecuador v Argentina
Colombia v Chile

The US held on to beat Ecuador 2-1. After the double red card at the 60th minute Ecuador laid siege to the US goal. A combination of heroic defending and a very wasteful Ecuadorian team saw the US through to the semis in Houston...where they'll probably get Argentina. :?

I don't care, they beat Spain, who were #1 in the world at the time, in the semis of the 2009 Confederations Cup. Why not take out another world #1 in the semis of a major tournament again. I can dream, can't I? :D

Got that wrong! Great win - just - but costly red card for Jermaine Jones and yellows for Wood and Bedoya mean they all miss the semi. Jones will be missed a lot.

Yep Bedoya, Wood and Jones will all miss the next game but we'll get Yedlin back. Jones is a big, and unnecessary, loss. That red card for a (very weak) fist to the face was the epitome of stupid. But I think we might miss Wood more. He had been running at other teams defenses, getting in behind them and stretching their shape. The two biggest, pleasant, surprises of this tournament so far had been Wood and Brooks, who has been an absolute rock, at center back.

If it is Argentina, which I would bet it will be, the US will be up against it even with a full strength squad. Their roster has a bunch of players on it that has it resembling a Champions League winning team. :o

I also think Mexico might win their game. As much as it pains me to say it, El Tri have better support in the US than the US does. In the US-Mexico games played here the Mexican fans usually outnumber the US fans. It'll be like a home game for Mexico and their form has been very good lately...

Mexico break a 22 game winning streak with a 7 (seven) nil loss to Chile.

That's a job loser right there!

LOL...did I get that one wrong. :o

With that kind of prognosticating prowess it makes me wonder how the hell I won the Prediction League here last season. :?

Mind you not that I am that upset about Mexico suffering their worst ever loss in a major tournament. But I should probably curb my enthusiasm about that because the US still has to play Argentina...

Well, i got three out of four  Can anyone beat Argentina? Do not think the US have enough to keep Higuain and Messi goalless for ninety minutes. Penalties seem their best option.

Very impressed by Chile as they are just getting better as the tournament progresses. They have been the only team to really trouble Argentina so far and gave Mexico the right old German going over. You have to wonder what long-term damage that will cause Mexico considering they were one of the pre-tournament favourites. Colombia cough and spluttered against a really good Peru team and Rodriguez and Bacca do not seem fully fit to me.

Argentina v Chile final.

Has Messi properly shown up to this tournament, or is he Messi/Rooney/Ronaldoing it?

Argentina in the final predictably, and as predicted, with ease. They led 2-0 at half and won the game 4-0 against a completely outclassed US team. The US is in the third place game and if they can win that this will have been a very successful tournament for them.

If it ends up being Argentina and Chile in the final that could be one helluva game.
