Europa League 2016/17

by Sanguine » 26 Aug 2016 12:49

Dundalk 'rewarded' for reaching the competition proper for the first time with a group of Zenit, AZ Alkmaar and Maccabi Tel Aviv. :|

Southampton have a toughy, with Inter, Sparta Prague and Hapoel Beer Sheva.

United will face Fenerbache, Feyenoord and another team on their Europa League debut, Zorya Luhansk, of Ukraine.

Group G is a belter - Ajax, Standard Liege, Celta Vigo, Panathinaikos.

That group G looks like a CL group in years gone by

Agreed, swap out Celta Vigo for someone like Deportivo La Caruna and it would be a very passable CL Group.

The Europa League seems to be getting a stronger and more competitive tournament every year.

Could easily see no British teams in the next round (barring Arsenal/Spurs/Man City delete as applicable who will obviously finish 3rd in their CL group)

I can't see Man Utd struggling to get out of that group, even if they played some fringe players, they would still have enough. I don't think Fenerbache or Feyernoord are the team people might think they are/used to be.

If Southampton can get a result in Prague then they could get through.

Does Matejovski still play for Sparta Prague?

Cracking result for the part-timers Dundalk - down to 10 men they found an equaliser to draw away al AZ Alkmaar.

Achievement of the night though goes to Maccabi Tel Aviv, who led Zenit 3-0 with 13 minutes to go, and managed to lose 4-3.

Hapoel Beer Sheva got a huge result, winning 2-0 at the San Siro against Inter.

And, of course, ManchesteROFL United.

Israeli & Russian match in having unusual scoring pattern. Nothing suspicious about that at all.

Wonderful night for football last night - fair play to Southampton, I thought they looked good from the little highlights I saw, but Prague are no strangers to the competition so good result.

I have to say, as soon as I saw the players Jose had left behind I felt they could struggle! Cue an absolute barrage of helmetry to the TalkSport phone-in!
