No Fixed Abode
If they win their game in hand the gap will be 8 points though. 4 out of their next 5 games are at home with Reading and Newcastle to play at the end of this month.

Brighton's remaining game in hand is against Newcastle though, so at least one team will drop points. Considering we have to play both teams as well, it's certainly not impossible that we'll threaten the top two.

I don't think we will, but it's possible.

I put 'if' at the start so you wouldn't disagree with me.

POINT SPREAD GIFS: CHAMPIONSHIP, 5 FEB 2017
Posted on February 6, 2017 by Experimental 3-6-1
It feels like a good time to dust off the animated GIFs I use to track how clubs are faring in the promotion, play-off and relegation battles.

These are explained in full here but put simply they show how each club’s points tally is changing relative to teams in previous seasons. There are three graphics – one for each race – which cycle through all the clubs involved in the order of their current league position.

Automatic Promotion

Newcastle and Brighton are unsurprisingly looking pretty healthy by historical standards. In fact nobody has ever failed to win promotion in the 21-year history of the current league structure with 61 points or more from 29 games (the Seagulls’ current tally), although Bolton ended up 3rd after having 60 at this stage in 2000/01.

Both Reading and Huddersfield would be looking decent value for a top two finish if the current incumbents weren’t storming so far ahead – both have tallies which compare favourably to previous second-place finishers.

Playoffs

The good news for the four teams trailing in the top two’s wake is that they all look to be on course to protect their play-off berths. All look to be faring better than average compared to teams finishing sixth under the current structure, although Norwich‘s impressive recent recovery makes them look credible challengers and Derby shouldn't be written off either.

The field looks to be narrowing however with Preston and Birmingham struggling to maintain a convincing pace. Aston Villa and Brentford now need a historically good recovery to make the play-offs this season – nobody has managed it from their current position in the last 21 campaigns.

Relegation

For what it’s worth I’m not trying to insult any clubs by including them here – I just wanted to put every team in at least one of the three graphics this time, as in future I’ll start to weed out those who aren’t likely participants in any of the races.

Bristol City and Burton are looking a lot healthier now than they did a few weeks ago, but still have points totals that are slightly below average for a relegation survivor so there remains work to be done.

Poor Rotherham look to be beyond salvation now – their points tally has been flatlining for a while and only one team has ever been in a worse position since 1995/96: Stockport had 13 points from 30 games in 2001/02 and finished rock bottom. The worst-placed survivor in this period was Crewe in 1998/99, who had 23 points at this stage – seven more than the Millers – but took 25 points from their final 16 games to finish 18th. A recovery of that magnitude would put Rotherham on 41 points – 10 more than the current 21st-placed side – so there is still hope.

Like most I think Newcastle and Brighnotatalltinpot & Hove will be the top two

Think then that the play off places will be populated by any 4 from these 6 clubs; Reading, Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheff Wed, Derby & Norwich

Just wish we were where we are now in the table but had played nearly all of those clubs twice rather than only Derby.

about right.

I think we will muddle along into the playoffs, but then i look at that list and more and more think it would be a pretty monumental achievement

I suspect that Fulham will be too inconsistent.

Theyre more likely than the perennial bottlers Derby. Theyre never getting out of the Championship.

I dont think most of the other teams in and around the play-offs are (on paper) quite as well equipped as we are tbh. Our squad depth is fantastic.

Not a patch on Derby, who have treated the last few seasons more like a game of Monopoly than football. Sadly for them no one has landed on Nick Blackman since they bought him....

They have a plethora of forwards but only 1 RB and very few defensive covers!

Brian "Mr T" says that there is actually a 3 year plan to get Reading to the PL and this season will be not be considered a failure if we finished between 7th and 10th so I guess that tells you roughly where the club's expectation/hopes were at the start of the season.

Contract talks to extend Jaap's current 2 year deal will not begin until the summer but I think it's safe to say the club will be looking to tie him down for a little longer to at least give themselves more security if nothing else.

Do you think that theres a case to be made that we would be better prepared to go up a season later or is it always better to go up at the first time of asking?

Season later. We didn't have the squad bones to cope under McDermott and it showed. Plus harmed the development of youth players and lost us Antonio.

Just to give an example. Bear in mind though, that I think the PL is shit and there's no novelty factor now. I'd rather be competitive in the Championship than spend a season losing to patronising big clubs. If we do it, it has to be to stick it this time.

I'd be happy enough to emulate what Brighton have been doing- backing a manager and building the squad over a number of seasons. Even an unsuccessful playoff campaign could spur the squad on.

Let's just not do a Derby.

If you took the finances out the equation, then I'd enjoy another season of being decent in the champ (presuming we would be of course) over an inevitable struggle in the Prem

However the sums of money available are literally a silver bullet to the clubs finances if managed well.

As someone who goes and watches Reading home and away week in week out i get quite insulted when i log into the back from the game thread the next day only to find the same old charachters clogging up yhe thread with their inane rubbish, over analysing everything having watched 5 mins of highlights on player.

Then i log into this thread to see the same people or person saying we shouldnt go up this season and next season is better. You cant choose when you go up, you just take your opportunity and make the most of it when you do.

Some people actually support the club and we deserve success even though some of our performances have been dull.

It'll be the 5 minute highlight jokeys scrambling for Wembley tickets if we get there if only to don their brand new jesters hat.

Through thick and thin.
