bcubed And why do FIFA tinker with stuff just before major tournaments anyway? We think we know the normal rules and interpretation and they always come up with something to confuse us.

Because "our" normal rules and interpretation are probably quite different from the normal rules and interpretation they have in South America or Asia - the rules might be universal, but the interpretations certainly aren't.

They're trying to find a common ground that works for everyone - and inevitably come up with a compromise that is strange for everyone.

It's an odd one
All I can find, with minimal research, is that the Italian and Spanish words for Morocco begin Mar

This is because of the large French influence in the country, whilst the official languages of the country are Arabic and Berber. The French word for Morocco is Maroc - and the abbreviation MAR is therefore used for sporting events and as the official country code.

Thought I'd seen Maroc used but couldn't find anything to confirm it. Maybe seen on athletes?

But what’s the betting it’s won’t be consistent and Switzerland, for example, will be SWI and not the completely meaningless (for English speakers) CHE (or even HEL).

I get that
Why not do that year in year out?
Not just before major tournaments?

It's SUI... https://www.footballsquads.co.uk/fifacodes.htm

Don't forget FIFA is historically a French organisation

Sutekh Is someone at ITV not able to spell Morocco as their score graphic has shortened the name to MAR instead of MOR.

But then given some of the rather odd abbreviations that they use on the FL highlights program it perhaps doesn’t surprise me much.

And French and Dutch so probably English is the exception. They call themselves Al Maghrib.

See above - the French term is Maroc, Morocco was a French colony and FIFA is French

I haven't watched all this game but even so Modric has committed at least 3 bookable offences. Blatant shirt pulls. Body check. No card to him afaik

Is it ITV putting the graphic there? Usually they get this feed direct from the host broadcaster.

The score chiron on screen constantly is ITV's, whenever the updates pop up that's the host broadcast

I think

Would make more sense if they used French names for all countries! Ecosse etc.

The ref in this Mar/Mor game doesn't seem to want to book anybody so once again we have inconsistency in refereeing.
I do like the playing time that reflects the stoppages and would like to see it more in our game.

That doesn't apply here - the Scottish team are boycotting this WC on ethical and humanitarian grounds. ;-)

Back to the football (with a small bit of shade for ITV natch) I'm impressed that since "the world cup really burst into life"* when KSA beat ARG we've been served up 3 0-0s out of 4 games
