Scylla For me he doesn't consistently control or change games in the way that the other two did/do. Perhaps as you suggest I haven't seen enough of him. When you're talking about the second best/most expensive player of all time, age only comes into it if you believe he's that good to start with? My son's only 6 but...

Ronaldo was £80m and Zidane would be that now, if he was in the modern game.........£60m for Fabregas doesn't quite put him in their class but it puts him above the likes of Andy Carroll, thats what i was trying to say.

He's good yes, but I don't think he's quite in that league. Right now he wouldn't even get in the Barca team and nobody else is going to bother to buy him knowing he only really wants to leave Arsenal for one club.

When you see the players who can't get in the Barca midfield you can see they don't really need yet.

Need of the buying club is really what sets the price.

There have been some silly prices banded about in the media but I think you have to take some of them with a pinch of salt as they'll include all the add-ons etc that they might end up paying.

I reckon Jones for £16m will turn out to be a good price though.

I was just looking at the most expensive transfers - supposedly inflation adjusted. Perhaps Zidane would be 'worth' 80m now which would put him and Ronaldo clear of the rest. Andy Carroll looks overpriced but Liverpool seem to accept that they paid over the odds due to the circumstances.

This is what i was trying to get at.........if Liverpool pay £35m for Carroll and £20m for Henderson, Fabregas is surely worth more than £35m

Hence the "who sets the asking price" question

I think the general response (certainly mine) is 'No he isn't, the others were overpriced'.

Indeed but is it not a case of "if he went for X then our player should go for at least X".........like Harry Redknapp said yesterday:

"Luka is not for sale, If there has been a bid of £22m that is ridiculous. There are people being sold for £20m who are not fit to lace Luka's boots."

I posted a pretty decent answer on the last page, even if I do say so myself.

Quotes like Redknapp's are for the media's benefit as much as anything else. Do you seriously think Spurs are sitting down with Chelsea saying 'well Liverpool paid £20m for Henderson'? Chelsea's response will be 'so fcuking what'?

As you (TBM) and everybody else have intimated it's not a rational pricing system. If it were I would start with Zidane (£55m with inflation? Though of course football inflation is different!) and end up with Fabregas at 30-40, Modric 25-30 and Henderson 10(ish).

Harry is one of the chief culprits for talking total bollocks about footballers and prices.

Praying that he leaves Arsenal for little money.

I like how Barca act as though they have a right to have him back. They had him before and let him slip. Merked.

Hmmmm, I think the word you want is "poached". Arsenal have been doing that a few times with other club's kids.

Scylla The market seems to come down to Barcelona. Anywhere else he might fancy that Arsenal would sell to? Barcelona aren't short of midfield players and suspect that he will eventually agitate to come?

A fee of £50-£60m would put him in the Ronaldo/Zidane class (Torres, Kaka and Ibrahimovic look overpriced). He's not that good?

I disagree - i reckon he is.....his touch, vision and passing ability goes un-noticed whislt watching on TV but if you see him live then you'll see how good he really is. Plus he has only just turned 24 so not even in his prime yet.

TBMers, you talk a lot of sense but there is no way that Fabregas is or ever will be in Zidane's league. I'm not giving you that one.

Maybe not.....but as said later on Zidane is more in the Ronaldo price bracket of £80m.....i was trying to get Fabregas away from the Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson bracket, as i feel he is a far far better player than those.
