Behindu There are stewards specifically assigned at every game to trying to get the away fans to sit down.

I reckon Reading fans would be better off watching the game and supporting the team rather than second guessing the stewarding of the away fans.

Fans would be better off full stop if they went to football to watch the game, but there are more than a few pockets for whom the experience quite sadly has to include embarrassing away-fans baiting and altercations with stewards.

I sing and shout and swear and stand with the best of them, but like H&P, have never been approached by a steward or given them reason to.

The point is that if you swear and stand, you are giving stewards a reason to speak to you.

If you have not been approached then it is either because the stewards where you sit are not so fussy or pedantic or it is just a matter of time before it happens

No, I disagree. I swear in frustration 'oh, oxf*rd off ref!', but it won't be a tirade and it won't contain a long list of expletives or continue for a minute. And I stand or jump up with the rest of the crowd at exciting moments.

I haven't been spoken too as I do not act in a way that warrants it.

I thought it was only persistent standing that the stewards complained about? I stand when everyone else is standing. I'd like to see the stewards approach everyone then and tell them to sit down! Same with swearing, there's always swearing at a bad decision or whatever, I've never seen a steward tell anyone off for it. Constant swearing however, with no pause for breath, should carry a warning from a steward imho.

Take your point but it's a fine line and if someone next to you takes exception to your swearing, the stewards could be in there, tapping you on the shoulder!

And someone else's exciting moments could go on longer than yours, although by that definition, anyone standing longer than about 30 seconds on Monday night shoudl be asked to explain themselves

Maybe one day you'll be fortunate to get the jobsworth steward who told me off for shouting too loudly! They are in a minority but believe you me they exist out there!

I'm intregued by this steward who told you off for shouting !
It must have been someone who had a headache or just was having a bad day. It's not something any steward would have been instructed to deal with and rather being a 'jobsworth' I'd suggest they were the opposite - someone who hadn;t actually worked out what thier job was !

FWIW

the geezer who got bundled out of the N Stand (by the democracy of the crowd..not the decision or action of any Steward) deserved it.

He had been goading MH (and pi55ing off anyone within earshot) for weeks.

never (knowingly) met the guy, but he comes across as the kind of fellah who is more interested on the theatricals pitchside..than the hysteria that goes on within the terraces.

Clearly the stewards weren't as conspicuous or so pro-active on the South Bank despite that being a far less safe environment for supporters.

I take your point about 'jobsworth' Behindu - I also had a different steward who threatened the kids with 'trouble from the control room' because they were stood in front of their seats before the teams had even come onto the pitch - so the 'Don'tknowjobs' clearly exist.

And only 'The voice of the stewards'?! They do you a disservice!

No - relax !!

And Athletico be assured that the pitch comes first every time.

But at the same time I like to know what actually goes on and try and find out rather than jumping up and down moaning about stuff. I don;t know everything, and get stuff wrong but if I do know thngs from 'the other side' and think they might be of use / interest I'll try and chip in with them.

RB - in the past the turnover of stewards was pretty high. People didn;t like working for bad money and spending 3 hours being the focus for disgruntled fans even if it wasn;t their fault for whatever was wrong. I think that meant you got lots of stewards who didn't know what was what. From what I can see it's improved, more stability, better mix, not so many agency staff. I do know some of the stewards and a lot of them are good people who have now been there a while. Always a few bad apples though.

I think our stewards are wonderful. The time I got threatened with removal of my ST for throwing shredded paper is just one example of their superb customer service skills.
