David James: "I was drunk when I took the call from Coppell"

by prostak » 27 Oct 2010 05:36

From his Observer blog:

Somehow it all converged at a single point: the morning after my stag do.

I received a phone call from an unknown number – I don't usually answer those but I was still drunk and so I picked it up. Much to my astonishment the man on the other end was Steve Coppell. He said: "All right Dave, I'm the Bristol City manager, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in having a look at the club?"

Always liked his column in The Observer. Couple of interesting points:

You've only got to look at the ball we're playing with and you'll understand one of the reasons why the game in this league is so different. It's horrible, it's like kicking a shot put around! It definitely has a detrimental effect on the way the game is played and that can't be good for a league competing for attention with the top flight.

Even in Portsmouth's darkest financial hour the players would fly to a game anywhere north of Birmingham, but here we travel to almost all of our games by coach.

He writes with an openness and intelligence that's refreshing in a footballer. I don't think it's ghost-written, is it? Certainly this column suggests it isn't.

I saw this as something 'new' being reported the other day, but it's nothing he didn't say at the time.

Used to donate it to specific charities, Sporting Chance etc, depending on the content of his column ...

I love how the same papers that report this story tried to claim Coppell knew nothing about the signing....

Did the Guardian try to claim that? They're not really reporting this 'story' in any case, it's just a snippet I took from his weekly column.

Mainly the local press to be fair. Ran a big article after Coppell's departure saying he was unhappy about the signing being made without his knowledge, then on Monday ran a big I was pissed when I spoke to Coppell story.

I'd be shocked if the Mail hadnt run the story either...
