Copa Libertadores Thread

by Unbelievable Jeff » 16 Apr 2014 15:37

Not that anyone is interested  but it is the start of the knock out stages of the Copa Libertadores tonight. It will kick off with Lanus of Buenos Aires, Argentina against Santos Laguna of Torreon, Mexico.

The other fixtures include:

Club Leon V Bolivar
Cruzeiro V Cerro Porteno
Defensor Sporting V The Strongest
Velez Sarsfield V Nacional Asuncion
Atletico Nacional Medellin V Atletico Mineiro
Gremio V San Lorenzo
Union Espanola V Arsenal De Sarandi

Tie of the round is either Lanus V Santos Laguna or Gremio V San Lorenzo.

Potential Winners:
Atletico Mineiro - Last years winner, posses a lot of quality including former Everton and Man City striker Jo and the great Ronaldinho.

Velez Sarsfield - Although going through a dip in form domestically they have 2 of the most feared strikers is South America in Lucas Pratto and Mauro Zarate along with some other very gifted players in defence and midfield including Desabato, Romero and Correa.

Santos Laguna - Suspect at the back but are very good going forward and can cause trouble for any team in the Competition. Key players include Carlos Darwin Quintero and Oribe Peralta.

So there is a Brief update of what is to come within the next couple of weeks. I will aim to keep it updated for the small minority of you who care :D

Great game last night between Lanus and Santos Laguna with Lanus running out 2-1 winners thanks to a 95th minute winner after being 1-0 down.

Elsewhere there were draws in the other two games played early this morning with Club Leon and Bolivar drawing 2-2 with former Wigan striker Mauro Boselli getting on the score sheet for Leon and a great result for Cerro Porteno of Paraguay getting an away draw against reigning Brazilian Serie A Champions Cruzeiro 1-1.

All of these three ties are set up nicely for the second leg.

The final game this week will be played in La Paz, Bolivia as The Strongest host Defensor Sporting of Uruguay. The Strongest are firm favourites for this one.
