Hillsborough Docudrama

by winchester_royal » 14 Apr 2009 01:34

The 1996 Docudrama ITV made about the disaster is being reshown at 9pm on ITV 3 on Wednesday. Haven't seen it myself, but apparently it is very moving and well worth a watch.

I listened to the 5live show of the survivors/ team and manager / families recounting the events. At the time a very shocking event that bought police incompetance, stereotypical views on supporters and crowd safety to a head. Very sobering even just listening to the accounts.

There was a very good account/analysis of this broadcast on Radio 4 on Sunday too that's worth listening too. A very fair and objective programme that concentrates on the facts and de-bunks the media myths.

It should be avaialble on i-player or whatever they call it.

A moving piece in the Times at the weekend, two friends who went to the game and were separated at the tunnel - one watched it all unfold in the side pen, the other experienced the full horror of the crush.

He describes seeing a man holding his arm in the air, bent at right angles halfway up the forearm. And how his own elbow was jammed against the throat of another supporter, who pleaded desperately for him to pull it away, before collapsing and falling under the tide that swept through the stand.

'We were not willing killers' he says of that day. The article makes clear his disgust for some of the media coverage after the event, but also the tone wracks of the guilt he feels about those who died.

I'm expecting an incredible night at Stamford Bridge later, not just for the match situation and what Liverpool have to achieve, but the occasion which will no doubt lend sombre passion to it.

'Greed.

There's a world of difference between banter and being a small-minded obnoxious cunt.

Not being direspectful at all. A very bad incident. I just don't want to hear about it every five minutes.

Maybe I could show some interest had Heysel not occurred.

Why?

What happened at Hillsborough was truly appalling. I think that it speaks volumes that 20 years on there is still bleating about it yet very little ever said about the "murder" of Juventus fans at Heysel.

Some consistency please and a lot less hypocrisy is called for.

Bleating?

Bleating about the deaths of people at a football match? Seriously?

I doubt Italian clubs mark Hillsborough any more than English clubs mark Heysel, although the mutual respect afforded to each set of fans by the other when Liverpool played Juventus in Europe a few seasons back spoke volumes. I didn't watch the away leg in Italy, but the atmosphere at the game at Anfield was truly exceptional, with reference to those killed in Heysel, many fans of both sides sporting 'joint' scarves and flags.

Italy played at the stadium that replaced it in Euro 2000 and, iirc, there was a small ceremony before the game.

But what really makes me moist is the tit-for-tat bollocks about the two tragedies. Turns me right on.

Three tragedies. It was never a penalty.

A very moving piece and essential viewing. The fact that the 96 never got the justice they deserved and that the South Yorkshire Police got off with barely a slapped wrist - especially that lying bastard Dukinfield - still makes me angry.

Read Phil Scraton's Hillsborough: The Truth. A worthy testament to all who died and if you do not get angry at the sheer incompetence and insensitivity of the police, then you are not human.
