RUMOUR - Tommy Smith

OK no great surprise but the Watford Observer is reporting:

But fee below those already rejected by Hornets
6:26pm Wednesday 1st July 2009

Brendan Rodgers is set to win the race to sign Tommy Smith, it is being reported tonight.

The Reading Chronicle claims the Hornets' two-time Player of the Season is poised to turn down a move to Premiership new boys Wolves and could be reunited with his former manager at the Madejski Stadium within the next week for around £800,000.

However, this fee seemingly flies in the face of Watford’s stance over their talisman, because last week we reported that two seven-figure bids for last season’s top scorer had been rejected by senior Vicarage Road officials.

Smith was at London Colney today as the Hornets players returned for pre-season training.

Thrown a wobbly at not being allowed to go? Or just made up reports.

Jimmy Russo blasts Royals "derisory" offer for Tommy Smith
9:01pm Wednesday 1st July 2009

Jimmy Russo has reacted angrily to suggestions that Watford star Tommy Smith is on the verge of being sold to Reading, calling the Royals’ offer for the Hornets talisman “derisory” and “insulting” and insisting there is no deal currently in place for the player to link up again with Brendan Rodgers.

The Watford chairman contacted the Watford Observer in response to a story we reported from the Reading Chronicle earlier this evening. This claimed Smith was poised to turn down a move to Premiership newcomers Wolves in favour of a switch to the Madejski Stadium for around £800,000 and that the deal could be completed within the next week.

But Russo has told us: “As far as I am concerned there is no deal whatsoever with Reading. I can 100 per cent guarantee that.

“They have made a derisory offer which I am not interested in,” said the chairman, who also branded Reading’s valuation of the 17-goal striker “insulting” and added that he had “no desire” to sell Watford’s leading asset.

LOLz at not having the desire to sell him, but needing to for the money!

Strange as it was said we'd rejected two bids of over a million last week for Smith if the offer is only 800k.

Maybe we've offered them 800 million?

Maybe Reading have offered more money up front?

Would be a great signing imo. Can play a number of posistions in different formations.

The squad doesn't need much addition, just a few quality signings like this.

Probably something like £800k up front and another £500k on promotion, which wont happen anyway...

Watford probably arent aware that we have a tight fooker of a chairman, and apart from the far and few between exceptional weak moments he has had in the past - we are a club that deals in thousands and not millions!

We are a club that will probably end up declining in our ambitions ,but the good news is that the balance sheet will be slightly in the black ....id just love to know where all the money amassed over the past 3 seasons has gone.......

If Madejski ever wanted to sell this club and prove that its not another ego massaging prank, then this is the season to get promotion - with no parachute payments next season and the iron fist around the club wallet thereafter, the premiership will become a distant memory

Hasn't this been done to death before, but just for you:

1) Premiership wages
2) Premiership facilities
3) Paying off the previous losses
4) Reducing some of the outstanding debt (short term debt)

Wolves (Champions)
Burnley (Promoted)

did not have parachute money.

Burnley were in the bottom four for gates and wages

Wolves financed by Steve Morgan (previously a serious candidate to take over at Liverpool) and have spent a consiberable amount in building their team over the last three years or so.

Burnley had a small squad of good championship players who had a (largely) injury free season. They will struggle big time next season

I think if Doyle is worth £6.5 million, Tommy Smith is certainly worth at least £2 million in terms of Championship transfer fees. If not more really.

Tommy Smith is 29 though (not far off 30 I think).

I know, but in reality he's definitely worth in excess of £800,000! That's why I said £2 million (ish) taking in account his age.
