One point off the top. Gibson says its a decision he 'had to make'. Must be something behind the scenes, Gibson has always seemed one of the league's more sensible chairmen.

Until he employed Southgate as manager in the first place. It was always a stupid decision. He should have sacked him 18 months ago!

McLaren's a damn good club manager - he took Boro to a UEFA cup final and is working wonders at FC Twente

Y21 - agree completely about McLaren, lots of support for him on tonight's 606 from boro fans too.

Well said. He won the League Cup with 'Boro and finished runners-up with them in the UEFA Cup, and was also Fergie's assistant in Man United's famous treble winning season of 1999.

He took Twente to second in the league in his first season, and also lost on penalties in the Dutch Cup final.

Not too shabby at all.

Doesn't just knee-jerk sack managers either, gives time where time is due, but isn't afraid to give someone the heave ho either.

McLaren's performance at FC Twente doesn't mean that his performance at Boro, with the players and money at his disposal, was any better than par.

The broader point was that Gibson has been far too indulgent with his managers. Southgate was hopeless from the outset and tolerating Robson's expensive drunk-driving approach to managing for what seemed like an eternity was moronic.
