Rochdale vs Luton

by Ian Royal » 11 Nov 2009 21:41

Rochdale playing some really nice passing football and totally dominant. Just can't put away a chance. They've had 4 or 5 great opportunities in about 20 minutes of the second half. Criminal finishing from Thompson and Dagnall.

Luton score via Kevin Gallen despite being pretty much incapable of stringing three passes together and thinking an attacking ball is teeing it up high into the D of Rochdale's penalty area. Good ball in from wide and an excellent flick of the toes nutmegging his marker and beating the keeper at his near post.

Was this a cup tie or something, I thought Luton was in the conference and Rochdale in League Two? :|

FA Cup replay I believe. First match finished 3-3 Luton having been 3-0 up at one point and 3-1 up with 15 minutes to go.

Luton certainly played like a non-league side. They were bloody awful. Really liked the look of Rochdale.

Pffff, 2-0 Luton so who cares really who you liked the look of. The result is everything, and it just goes to prove that nice passing football and being dominant is so very often so very ineffective at Football League level. You play to your strengths, and Luton have proved over 2 games they are stronger than Rochdale. You don't get points for style.

It's a cup result, they throw up some odd things. I never said Rochdale deserved to win, just that I liked the look of them. Thompson should have been taken out the back and shot after his two headers. I think Dagnall was a little less guilty of criminal finishing.

A better striker and better defending at set pieces and Rochdale (on that one showing) look quite capable of playing at a higher level. Luton looked like they'll be playing non-league football for quite some time.

Rochdale 2nd in League two with a goal difference of +14 by the way. Suggests maybe their strikers were having an off day.

To be fair Luton are 5th in the conference, which surprised me a lot.

Maybe this is part of the reason why they aren't playing at a higher level, and haven't played at a higher level for 35 years.

Just a hunch.

Looking very good for playing at a higher level next season.
