2010 2011 Premiership Squads

by No Hoops » 05 May 2010 15:34

The League has announced that, from the start of next season, all Premier League clubs will be limited to 25-men squads, of who, only 17 can be over the age of 21, being trained by somebody in the English and Welsh professional systems.

Big effect on players being available, hence why Zurab would be interested in coming to us.

I've heard people say "oh dear Arsenal will struggle when this comes in" but i would have thought Arsenal would be one of the better off clubs? :?

How does this work if a club has more players under long term contracts than can be included in the squad ?

Presumably they loan the extras out and shuffle the squad in January ?

Good news it will boost the value of young home grown players so Gylfi, Church, karacan etc are now a little bit more valuable !

Can;t see why it would be a problem for Arsenal. Chelsea would have a problem possibly though.... and Liverpool

So, there will be a shed load of Premiership "youngsters" not part of the squad looking to get out on loan next season, let's hope Brian and Nicky are on top of that

In addition there will be players like Bertrand who will presumably not be happy at being part of a squad to get an occasional game here and there and therefore be looking to get away so another heap of players to keep on top of

As a matter of interest, how many clubs will be affected by this in that they'll have to drop people out of their squads and does this squad thing only apply to PL games meaning they could have different squads for different cup competitions

Lastly it woudn't help Reading as we'd fielded 31 players by about game 10 this season!

This answers a few questions.

Average squad size is 41 players so quite a few will need to be moved on.

Why would you sign for a club if you are not going to be in the 25 man squad.

Looks like a very interesting summer.

And presumably means talent will drop down the leagues, hopefully less foreign imports will be attracted over and to get games wage demands will have to be reduced.

Squad size of 41 = 1st team squad of 25-30 plus 10+ kids given a number.

Kids simply won't be given a number and will play reserve or age group football

Its the kids that aren't going to make it and a few deadwood players that are going to go.

Only 17 can be over 21 though

But it says

"As of next season clubs will be required to have a squad named of up to 25 players, of which no more than 17 can be over the age of 21 and not home grown." - so 8 will make it, which realistically is all that do make it anyway!

What I was saying is that the 41 players mentioned upthread include a chunk - a large chunk - of players that can be safely ignored.

The point being that saying squads were ~ 40 strong was deeply misleading.

Impact of 2010-11 Premier League quotas on transfers?

by Forbury Lion » 19 May 2010 09:13

Premier League clubs limited to 25 players, 17 of which can be over 21 years old and not "home grown" (having been affiliated to a English or Welsh club for 3 years before their 18th birthday). http://www.premierleague.com/page/Acade ... 59,00.html

There may be some good players who fail to make the 25 at a club and would likely be interested in first team football at a lower level.

Also of interest is how our current squad would fit into these rules if we were to gain promotion at the end of the season. Exactly which of our players would be classed as home grown? Even if we don't gain promotion, I can see these rules filtering down the leagues in seasons to come.
